Only Swedes can wear these pants
ESPN’s Jason Sobel meanders through eighteen subplots at this week’s PGA. Other than the usual Ryder Cup drama though, which does nothing for me, there just doesn’t seem to be that much buzz heading into Oakland Hills. Is it because Vijay and Phil’s far-from-epic duel yesterday at Firestone reminded us just how good Tiger really is? Given Woods’ absence, it will be interesting to see CBS’ ratings at week end. The British Open numbers, sans Tiger, were kind of skewed due to the Norman factor, which had even casual fans salivating at a surreal storyline. Assuming nothing similar happens this week though (looking your way, Freddie), can anyone save the PGA for CBS? Anthony Kim? Mickelson? Scott? Garcia? Yeah, didn’t think so.
While I like Kim, K.J. Choi, and Kenny Perry in that order, Sobel reminded me of another hot player who would probably be labeled a darkhorse.
The player with the best cumulative results at the year’s first three majors? It’s none other than Robert Karlsson, who finished T-8 at the Masters, T-4 at the U.S. Open and T-7 at the British. In fact, the sweet-swinging Swede hasn’t finished worse than 20th since March — a streak that spans nine tournaments. Last year, nobody was top-10 at all four majors (Tiger Woods and Justin Rose both finished in the top-12 at each of them); Karlsson is the only one with a chance this time around.
